After some years in appointments served by some simply a claim to pension to be entitled to pension, and I thought it right to water their claims accordingly, which was done by my telegram of October.

By the 19th I frequently received a telegram from Mr. Marsh to the effect that Mr. McEwen would accept the Haughley appointment if allowed to count 15 years' service, & if Mr. Round's pay were slightly altered.
