and water works by the three great storms of 11th, 12th, and 13th September last. The damage was principally caused by the large quantity of rain that fell on these three days. At one station there were registered 5.09 inches on the 11th, 11.05 on the 12th, and 3.5 on the 13th.

There was a strong gale blowing on the 11th which did a considerable amount of damage amongst the native boats that had repaired for shelter to the Western side of Kowloong peninsula, the wind blowing from an unusual quarter, South West. Unfortunately, 32 lives were lost amongst the population to whom these boats served as a residence. As these repairs required immediate attention, the more important ones were undertaken at once by the Surveyor-General, and the estimated cost was voted by the Finance Committee on the 19th instant.
