With reference to my despatch No. 257 of the 26th inst., I request that you ascertain from the F.O. whether they have conveyed to the Chinese Govt. (on or about 14/7/1899) that they acquiesce in the approval of Mr. Marsh; and whether the answer received will meet the steps which have been taken, in view of the disturbances.
