I have the honour to report to Your Lordship that the Police have since obtained information that a considerable number of Members of the Sam Hop Ui are now present in the Colony, and that these people who have been holding meetings and subscribing money - which, it is supposed, is to be employed in the purchase of arms.
The members of this secret society, who are more generally known as the "Triads", may be described as a kind of Chinese Fenians. Their object has always been supposed to be to upset the present Manchu Dynasty, who have ruled China for the last 200 years. They do not appear to entertain any hostile feelings towards the Government of the Colony, although in common with other Chinese they feel great excitement and indignation at the verdict of the Jury in Canton last week, whereby an Englishman, who had killed a Chinese and wounded two others, was found guilty of manslaughter only. To the Chinese mind this verdict is inexplicable,
