leaving only two, for whom he had no doubt some employment could soon be found in Merchants or Lawyers' Offices here, and he recommended that under the circumstances all six should be relieved of the responsibility of refunding the amounts received from Government, a recommendation which I have approved, as it only seemed fair.

By closing the Normal School the whole of the expenditure ($3496) will not however be saved. Mr May, who has been Principal of the Normal School, will have to be provided for; he has been nearly five years in the employ of the Government Educational Department, although he has not been confirmed in any appointment. It would be hard, therefore, to turn adrift suddenly a gentleman who is reported to be a trained Master, bearing excellent testimonials, having good knowledge of Chinese, in which he recently passed with credit his third examination.
