published, and the Registrar General reported that the warning has had a most salutary effect.

Referring to my despatch of 12th instant, I have the honour to report for Your Lordship's information that Major-General Sargent and Commodore Kuper both made arrangements to respond to any request for further assistance that might be received from the Acting British Consul at Canton. Fortunately, however, nothing has since occurred to induce him to make such a request.

The Municipal Council of Hongkong forwarded an application for a loan of some rifles for the purposes of self-defence. Requests of this nature are dealt with by the Officer in Command of the Forces, and handed this application to Major-General Sargent, who, after communicating with the Acting British Consul, forwarded it.

& have the honour to be,

Your Lordship's Most Obedient Servant,

Stannistering the Command,

3.36.
