No official reports have yet reached Hongkong, but the information received, which will be found in the annexed extracts from the Daily Press, is believed to be reliable. Order had, it was stated, been restored by the combined efforts of some of the residents and of a Chinese Military Force.

It considerable amount of ill feeling was reported to prevail some weeks ago amongst the lower classes at Canton. It originated in a disturbance which took place on the ultimo between some Foreign employes of the Imperial Customs and some natives, when one of the latter was killed and others wounded. The only information that I possess on the subject is contained in the annexed extracts from the Daily Press and China Mail. The Chinese were represented to be extremely irritated by the slowness of the judicial proceedings taken in this matter, which was so different to the summary justice that would probably have been administered in accordance with the practice of their country.
