Acting known Solicitor, Mr. A. B. Johnson, who states that he has reason to believe that Mr E. Sharp, of the Firm of Sharp, Toller and & Johnson, who is now absent through ill health, intends to place his resignation in Your Lordship's hands.

Mr Johnson has on two occasions filled temporarily this post, and he is recommended by the Judges of the Supreme Court and by the Attorney General.

2. The salary of the post is $2,400 a year, equivalent to about £436. The occupation of chambers in the Supreme Court by Mr Sharp and his partners has, I understand, been tolerated rather than expressly sanctioned by Government since the year 1861.

The attention of the Secretary of State was called to the great inconvenience of this arrangement by the late Mr Justice Knowles, when he was at home on leave a few years ago, and the opinion was then expressed by Despatch 19141, dated 30th October 1879, by Mr Secretary Beach, that if the space occupied by the Crown Solicitor was required for the Supreme Court, he should be called on to give them up.
