I was appointed in November 1865 as Medical Officer to take charge of Emigrants for the Mauritius Government between India and the Colony. The salary was ¥300 a year, with a superadded head for every emigrant carried either from India to Mauritius or vice versa, making the appointment equal to about £600 a year.
In 1867, when the epidemic of fever broke out in Mauritius, I was detained in the Colony to assist the other medical men.
