It is now a year that my salary as Inspector may be increased from £100 to £200 per annum, making my salary in all £1000 per annum.

In a similar application which I had the honour to make in June 1880, the Secretary of State replied that it could only be granted on the condition of my giving up private practice. As I believe His Lordship was not then fully acquainted with the great increase which has taken place of late years in the duties of the Colonial Surgeon, I venture to lay some of them again before His Lordship in support of my present application.

As His Lordship based his refusal on the fact that I have the right of private practice, I will endeavour to show that that right has been greatly restricted by the increase in my public duties and that these now take up a far greater portion of my time than was required of my predecessor.
