I received early on the following morning, (the 25th instant), this reply.

I thank Your Lordship for so promptly acceding to my request. I propose to proceed by English Mail Steamer on the 31st instant to Shanghai, where Sir Harry Parkes expects to arrive from Japan on the 5th September. I had invited him to visit me at Hongkong before he proceeded to his new post at Peking; but as he is obliged to proceed thither without delay, it was arranged that, subject to Your Lordship's approval, we should meet at Shanghai. I may probably accompany Sir Harry Parkes to Peking from Shanghai, if I find that this expedition can be so arranged as to ensure my being able to return to my post here within the six weeks
