very seriously interfere with other agencies that are kept afloat with difficulty. It will be a hard and up-hill struggle, and perhaps, unless there are a few enthusiastic souls ready to work for the Church when its time is uncertain one of Commer... I have great faith in the vitality of the Church of England, but many things here will conspire against it at first. We have no Baroness Burdett Coutts to fall back upon. The Body of united conformists find it next to impossible to maintain one solitary Church. Would the Government think it a good thing to see the Catholic Church in the same straits?

16. No one has been injured by the small Ecclesiastical grant to the Church of England in this place. I see from the papers brought by last Mail that Lord Derby stated in his place in the House of Lords that they give nothing towards the religion of the heathen majority in Hong Kong. This is not exactly correct. Their temples in the town, outskirts, and villages stand on favorable sites and are exempt from taxes. The annual total thus remitted would make a very respectable grant.

It should also be remembered that immense sums are spent annually on the education of the Chinese in Hong Kong, and that, in Chinese estimations, the most important part of that education consists in the teaching of the Chinese "Sacred Scriptures", the source whence...
