It is, moreover, on official record that Mr Price, the Surgeon General; Dr Ayres, the Colonial Surgeon; and Mr Deane, the Captain-Superintendent of Police, have suffered from severe sickness on occasions when they have made periodical inspections, similar to those which formed the daily routine of the duties of Mr. Neave. On one of these occasions Dr Ayres
contracted
an attack

typhoid fever, which very nearly proved fatal.
