sooner will a knowledge of English be disseminated: but I do not

know

of any

method worth

apart from

a thorough educational training

in

a boy which

Knowledge of English

can at once be acquired

by a large number

of

Chinese

and other foreign residents.

To post Englishmen

as teachers would

involve an

enormous expense; and it is

only now

that

young

Chinese

and Indians who have had

an

English education are

becoming available

as

teachers. In earlier days,

(and the Government system of

education is hardly

a quarter of a century old) it

was not

easy to induce young men

to accept

such posts, as witness the great difficulty that was experienced in starting and retaining

a master for the first attempt,

(that made in the Village of Aberdeen in 1873) to have English taught in other schools besides the Central School.
