For the great majority of the Firemen are Chinese; fires generally occur in the Chinese quarter, and in Chinese houses, while of the entire population of this island, exceeding one hundred and sixty thousand (160,000), all are Chinese with the exception of less than three thousand English (men, including the Garrison and Squadron), women and children, and about five thousand Portuguese and Indians.
(4) The Superintendent should be an able-bodied and active man, who can arrive on the scene immediately on the outbreak of a fire, and can show the way in working fire-engines, planting ladders and fire-escapes, etc. Now Mr. Wodehouse is a remarkably athletic man of thirty-eight years of age.
