shall be Entitled to add a further period of five years. At my age, three years of forles and in good health, and the probability is, that if my Application is granted, the Colonial Civil Service will not be troubled with any further Claim on my behalf.

But, I think it my duty to my family (before accepting the appointment) to make some provision, for the Eventuality of my health breaking down, before the Expiration of ten years, the period fixed as giving me a claim to a pension from the Shanghai Municipality.

I trust Your Lordship will not, in consideration of my past services, think it unreasonable in me in preferring this my request to be permitted, to accept the post of Captain Superintendent of Police at Shanghai, and to be so conditioned.
