centuries,—is as ancient as the Laws of the Twelve Tables at Rome. In a previous despatch, I pointed out
the close similarity between a Roman house at Pompeii of eighteen
hundred years ago, with its
atrium and impluvium, and a

the "Elements of Gaius, and the "Institutes of Justinian', together with
such modern treatises as those of Sir Henry Maine on Ancient Law, on "Village Communities, and on the Early History of Institutions!
