correspondence that has passed on the subject including my letter of the 8th March last, and that he has so far approved of the application as to sanction a grant of $5,000 to be paid on the execution of the necessary Deed.

It is however with the deepest regret that I find His Lordship refusing to authorise the insertion in the Trust Deed of any proviso enabling the Trustees to withdraw the School from the operation of the Grant-in-Aid Scheme (still maintaining it as a public school) if at any time such alterations should be made in the provisions of that Scheme as to give rise to conscientious objections on the part of the Catholic Managers. If Her Majesty's Government persists in this refusal I shall have no choice but to decline with thanks and with many apologies for the trouble I have given, any further offer, however large, but I humbly hope that the Right Honourable the Earl of Derby may be induced to re-consider the matter and with a view to obtain such re-consideration I have the honour to request you to refer the question to His Excellency.
