Colony, Admiral Meyer will visit Shanghai, and other principal Chinese ports. In fact it seems to be arranged that while Admiral Combet and one French Squadron will aid in carrying the war in Tonquin, Admiral Meyer and another French Squadron will make a demonstration along the coast of China. The French Minister, Venipotentiary, M. Tricou, is still at Shanghai, but Li-Hung Chang, a high Chinese Functionary with whom he was lately in communication there, has returned to Tientsin on his way to Peking.
I shall not fail to keep Your Lordship informed of the general progress of affairs in this quarter of the world, whenever I have news of interest to communicate.
