$30 Inspector of Nuisances.

C.S.O.

1706 of 1883.

Lazarette,

Read also: The Clerk of Councils' Minute thereon, dated the 28th instant.

The Committee find that ADAMS, who has a large family, has been about 5 years in the service, and in order to prevent himself and his family from being a burden on the Colony, they recommend the payment to him of a sum of $360, equal to 6 months' pay.

SERVICES EXCLUSIVE OF ESTABLISHMENTS.

Works and Buildings.

(4.) Read: Letter No. 144 of the 10th instant, from the Surveyor General, submitting $10,700. Estimates for erecting a Lazarette on Stone Cutters' Island, consisting of:--

C.S.O.

1625 of 1883.

Resumption

A Police Guard House.

A Bungalow Hospital for 20 beds.

A Surgeon's Hut.

Suitable Out-offices.

A Landing Pier, and, at a distance of 300 yards, a very rough but substantial

Shed to house 200 coolies,

at a total cost of $10,700.

The Committee find that in consequence of the large traffic of Emigrants through this Port, and in view of the periodical outbreaks of Cholera in the Coast Ports, it is absolutely necessary to have a Lazarette, and recommend therefore that the amount be voted, and immediate steps be taken to commence the work.

Roads, Streets, and Bridges.

(5.) Read: Letter No. 138 of the 2nd instant, from the Surveyor General, asking for a

of Street vote of $10,000, for the resumption of certain Streets in Kennedy Town which were sold in

Kennedy

Town,

$10,000. 1881.

C.S.O.

1604 of 1883.

Sundry

repairs to Streets, $5,000.

C.S.O.

1708 of 1883. Maintenance

$900.

The Committee finding that the Streets in question had been included in several lots of ground and sold in 1881 for a sum far above their intrinsic value, and that it is necessary for the development of Kennedy Town that these Streets should be opened out, recommend that the sum asked for be voted.

(6.) Read: Letter No. 137, of the 30th ultimo, from the Surveyor General, asking for a sum of $5,000 for repairing the various Streets in the Colony, the amount already on the Estimates being insufficient for the purpose.

The Committee finding that most of the Streets want metalling, and that the recent rains have added much to the damage, recommended that the sum asked for be voted.

(7.) Read: Letter No. 146, of the 10th instant, from the Surveyor General, asking for a supplementary vote of $900 to put the timber jetties and timber landing steps along the water frontage of the City in a safe state of repair.

The Committee finding that most of the wooden piers require repairs, and that the damage to them has been augmented by the recent heavy gale, recommend that the sum asked for be voted.

Miscellaneous Services,

(8.) Read: Letter No. 143, of the 6th instant, from the Surveyor General, recommending

a gratuity equal to 3 months' pay, amounting to $75, to Foreman of Road repairs, DIRRELL, on his leaving the Service through ill-health.

The Committee find that DIRRELL has been employed by the Surveyor General's Department during the past 4 years, and that he applied for leave of absence; but not being on the fixed or temporary establishment, being only a journeyman paid at the rate of $25 per month, it was not possible to grant his request.

Under these circumstances the Committee recommend that the amount proposed by the Surveyor General be voted.

The Chairman adjourns the Committee sine die.

ARATHOON SETH,

Clerk of Councils.

W. H. MARSH,

Chairman.
