Wiersmann's stemmers; the Douglas with one hundred (100) and the Luis, with 483 Chinese passengers on board, arrived at Hongkong from the neighbouring Chinese Ports of Swatow &.
They brought clean bills of health, the English Consul having certified that Cholera existed at Swatow, and in its immediate neighbourhood, but that the Theatre of the Disease had declined in the bound that sense on the day previous to her departure. The former was at first admitted to pratique; and the latter the Dale was placed in quarantine of observation. It should be mentioned that the Dale was bound for Singapore, and called Hongkong only for coals and water.
On the same instant, two deaths occurred on board the Dale, one from Cholera, the other from suspected Cholera. On the evening of the same day, one of the crews of Douglas was taken ill with what appeared to be Cholera, while two others were suffering from severe Diarrhoea. Consequently the Douglas was also placed in quarantine; and both Steamers were directed to anchor off Stonecutter's Island.
