were removed in 1876, the ground was discovered to have been more or less tabled into four different plateaus. These actual levels, with considerable modifications in respect of their dimensions, will be retained in the manner shown in Drawing No. 1, where the heights of the ground above the sea were given in small red figures; the first or highest plateau, which is 32 feet wider, will be 160 feet above sea-level and will form a yard (or Compound) between Staunton Street and the southern front of the building.
The second or principal plateau, containing the main building, will be 8½ feet lower than the first. To compensate for this objectionable difference of levels, the main building's basement will be raised one storey to a height of 4½ feet above the level of the Southern Compound, securing ventilation for the rooms on the ground floor as well as light and air for the basement beneath.
The third plateau is a long strip running along the western edge.
