Superintendent at Hongkong of the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Company, (M. Bullard) for permission to lay another submarine cable between North Point and Kowloon in the same position as that in which this Company's present cable is laid.

2. I am not aware of any objection to granting the permission applied for, but Your Lordship has directed me to refer to you all applications whatsoever for telegraphic extension.

* This is a point in the island of Hong Kong, and Kowloon is the peninsula opposite, forming part of this Colony.

In addition to what is stated in the enclosure, Mr Bullard has submitted to me that as one of the cables already laid between Hongkong and Kowloon has been seriously damaged by a ship's anchor, it is thought that as the "Sherard Osborn", the repairing ship of the Eastern Extension Co is now in this port, this would be a good opportunity to lay another cable of a heavier type, for the existing cable cannot be depended on for any length of time.
