communicated telegraphically with the Company's Head Office for China and Japan in Shanghai, Shanghai, I have been requested to state (as I had the honor of doing verbally to Your Excellency on the instant, that although it may be desirable for the interests of all to see the new business complete right through to Hongkong) The Great Northern Telegraph Company has no other interest in the undertaking than that of supplying the Hongkong Telegraph Company with the necessary material and engineers for the construction of their line; and that it, consequently, is immaterial to the Company in what manner, or on what conditions, Her Majesty's Government may allow the telegraph line to be connected with Hongkong.
[L.S.] 3. 5. Schmitz
Superintendent of the
Great Northern Telegraph Company.
