present him from becoming permanent resident in this Colony. As I have stated elsewhere, Captain Dempster is now temporarily filling the post of Acting Superintendent of the Police, during the absence of Mr Deane, entirely to the satisfaction of the Government and of the public of this Colony.

the office in question, I would respectfully refer to my previous despatch

April 24th last.

on this subject for the reasons which present me from recommending the appointment of Mr Hayward to be Superintendent of the Gaol. He is a meritorious Officer, and

a good second, but not qualified to be first in charge.
