As the privilege of remittance at the Government rate of Exchange, four shillings and two pence, is to be abolished for the future in the case of Constables enlisted in England, I submit that their pay should be fixed at forty-five dollars a month (that is, at the current rate of Exchange, three shillings and seven pence half-penny), somewhat less than one hundred pounds a year, viz., ninety-seven pounds seventeen shillings and six pence. I also submit that in the case of the English Constables now in the Force, they should be given the option of abandoning the privilege of remittance, and of accepting a similar payment of forty-five dollars a month.
This, together with raising the pay of Third Class Inspectors from sixty to seventy dollars a month and of Sergeants from forty-five to fifty-two dollars a month, would, after due regard has been given to the loss that might be experienced by the Government should the men exercise their privilege of remitting what they...
