And it is to be hoped that when they apply for special protection for their houses and Mores, they always ask for English or Rifle, and not for Chemical Instables.

8. Major Taylor has read this dispatch, and authorises me to state that he entirely concurs with my views; also that he will write officially by this mail to the War Office to that effect; intimating, at the same time, that he will be prepared to supply a thoroughly efficient Military Adjutant from the Officers now in garrison at Hongkong, without prejudice to the discharge by that Officer of his Regimental duties.

9. In accordance with the Executive and Legislative Councils, and with the general tenor of this despatch, I recommend, for the reasons, and in the conditions stated to the above, that there be appointed to the Police Corps a Military Adjutant from among the officers of the Garrison for the time being, who will act as second in Command of the Force, taking the place of the Superintendent in case of his indisposition or absence; assisting him.
