How of late years, there have been several combats between the Police and gangs of smugglers, with considerable loss of life on both sides - not long ago a desperate attack was made with the object of robbery on the house of a wealthy Chinese Merchant in the centre of this city, by a gang of above fifty robbers from the Mainland who were not overpowered without bloodshed, and who could not have been repelled but for the strength and alertness of the armed English Police and sailors.
