fortharing if there was any chance of their acceptance. Assuming, however, that a suitable candidate could be found
to replace him as Superintendent of
Apuim Revenue, neither the pay nor
the position that could be offered
to him in the Colonial Secretary's
Office would be sufficient.
11. There are two other Cadets
now studying Chinese at Canton, Mr. Mitchell and Mr. May. The former will probably
in a twelvemonth, when he has
passed his final examination, be brought into
this Department until some permanent
post is assigned to him. It is not desirable, however, to remove either
of the two Cadets from Canton at present,
as such a step would interfere with
their studies in Chinese, which have hitherto been
a very important part of
their training, and might be detrimental to
the time hitherto devoted
to that object - I am
of opinion
that there ought always to be two
Cadet Cadets attached to the Colonial Secretary's Department, one permanently as Assistant Colonial Secretary, and the other temporarily pending the
occurrence
