9. There is little to list single work to occupy. We whole time of a separate Officer as Auditor-General in scrutinising provided that his work be limited as in many other Colonies to personal supervision over the work of his subordinates - If, however, he is to personally examine accounts, he will be deeply involved. have to devote time to spare for any other work. My recommendation in 1879 was confined to the transfer of the duties of Auditor from the Colonial Secretary to some other official whose work was not so onerous. Mr. Lister could have undertaken the work, having the necessary familiarity with accounts. But his recent appointment as Treasurer places him out of the question, and although I could suggest some other Officials who would devote sufficient time to the supervision of the Audit Department, none of them, in my opinion, possess sufficient acquaintance with accounts to exercise that supervision in an efficient manner.
