of the interests jeopardised. A steam dredger will have to be
sought and kept permanently
at work. It will not be able to
keep pace with the operations of nature, but it
at all events
may retard by a great many years the final closing up to the book traffic of all access
5. The new seawall now completed is of two kinds, an entirely
new typhoon-proof structure along Praya West,
where there are no more reclamations seaward to be made, and an old wall strengthened and repaired along Praya
East and West where the Imperial and Colonial Governments think further reclamations probable
as the city increases
in wealth and population.
Against this idea I would
strongly recommend that
general steam
dredging operations be limited principally to the Praya West portion where the sea-wall is permanent. Much and constant dredging work will of
course be required to be
done along the East and West Prayas but this might be limited
to certain points, such as lower outlet-mouths and approaches to jetties and landing places. It will
