Surveyor - Theval, R.P. Price, respecting Re purchase of an Powerful Patent Elcan Dredger for the harbour colours.

2. Mr. Price, as will be seen, states "there can be no doubt whatever as to the necessity, from a sanitary point of view, no less than in the interests of the trade of the place, of deepening the water along the Marine frontage of the city, so as to leave at least one or two feet of water over the present foreshore during low tide" - Admiral Willes, C.B. also thinks a dredge necessary.

$4.75 Andrews Report. When administering the Government, he also thinks a dredge necessary to keep clear the outlets of sewers and drains. Further, the Harbour Master, Captain Thomsett, complains of the foreshore fronting his office. He says "the stench is unbearable. I have to put up with it during office hours only, but the Boarding Officer and his wife, the boats' crews and their families, live here and breathe the foul air day and night".
