The returns of the Gaol and the report of the officer in charge have to be sent home by the Governor in a separate despatch in accordance with standing instructions. I beg to submit the following observations on these documents for His Excellency's consideration.

The returns of the Gaol for 1882 shew a gradual diminution in the number of prisoners confined, from 721 on the first day of January to 582 on the 31st December last.

The total number of persons committed to the Gaol during 1882 was 3498 against 4150 during the previous year.
