I concur in

your opinion that it is not

desirable in principle

that the Chief Justice

should sit in

a Colonial Legislature unless

a sufficient number

of qualified persons cannot

be otherwise obtained;

and I also fully agree with you in thinking

that the existing

arrangement should

not be disturbed while

the present Chief Justice continues to hold

his office.

I further approve

of your recommendation

that the Surveyor General, who is at

present an unofficial

Member, should be

transferred to the official

side of the Legislative Council; and as

you have already been instructed by my telegram

of the 19th of April that

the Registrar General is

to have a seat in

the Legislative Council,

the matter is well...
