I lost no time in placing myself in communication on this subject with the Executive Council, as also with the Officer Commanding Her Majesty's Troops in this Colony, (Major-General Sargent, C.B.), and with the Surveyor-General, (Mr. Price). I now forward a letter from the Commanding Royal Engineer transmitted to me by the Officer Commanding the Troops.

The War Office asks :-
(a.) If certain sites of proposed Works of Defence will be reserved by the Civil Government, and
(b) If the Civil Government will undertake the survey of those sites, "contoured at vertical intervals of 5 feet."
It will be seen from the enclosed letter of Major Lloyd, R.E., that (a) "The sites of the Batteries, existing or proposed, already belong to the War Department, with the exception of Quarry Point and Stonecutters' Central, which belong to the Colonial Government"; and that...
