front of the property leased. This work is now rapidly approaching completion; and the Surveyor-General believes that, unless the gap existing between the two ends already built, and which is in front of the Government property, is closed up, the sea, during one of the periodical typhoons, may probably rush in at the back of the walls already constructed, and demolish them; when claims for compensation would doubtless be preferred against the Government. Another reason put forward by the Surveyor-General and admitted by the Captain Superintendent of Police is the necessity of at once closing up this gap in the sea-wall for at the sea-wall is the necessity of providing a basin of shelter during stormy weather for the six steam-launches belonging to the Government, as also for the new floating-fire-engine and for several rowing boats attached to the Police and Harbour Departments.
The cost of the proposed work is estimated by the Surveyor-General at $35,000, which is in addition to the $50,000 required for the New Water Police Station, boat-sheds,
