to be done by Government to put the Police barracks and Stations in proper order to lodge the force properly.
The cost of these works is estimated by Mr Price at less than $135,700 and he suggests that the expenditure should be spread over several years. I have come to the conclusion that there can be no doubt that the health of the force is seriously affected by having to reside in overcrowded, ill-constructed quarters; and that, though extra night duty may to some extent be injurious in some cases, it is impossible to estimate what that extent may be so long as their barrack accommodation is not improved in accordance with the recommendation of the Surveyor General, with which the Colonial Surgeon concurs; nor can it be predicted with any certainty that so long as the barracks in their present condition are maintained, there will be any material improvement in the health of the force.
