I regret to state that my personal observation and enquiries furnish ample proof of the accuracy of Mr Chadwick's remarks as to the superiority of the sanitary conditions of the Chinese dwellings in Canton over those in Hongkong; and of the justice of my reflections on this subject in my recent despatch No. 41 of the 24th April ultimo (paragraph 14). Mr. Chadwick writes: "The type of house in Hongkong is quite different to that in use on the neighbouring mainland; and I am certain that the lower class population is more densely packed together in Hongkong, and worse provided with appliances for cleanliness, than they are in Canton."
