advanced condition of the Colony it is sobery desirable that one of the Magistrates at Lachau should be a trained lawyer - In Many cases Counsel appear & Conduct the proceedings at the Police Court and in Some instances Counsel appear - Besides The Magistrates sitting together have very considerable powers under local Ordnances.
And we think it advisable that one at least of the Magistrate should be further familiar with books of Authority and should know where to find Cases referred to and be able to judge of their bearing on the questions before them- We therefore think that a Barrister, provided he possessed other necessary qualifications, would be the most fitting person to fill the vacancy-
The salary offered (£800 per annum) is not sufficient to tempt anyone in good practice to accept the appointment. If a Barrister be appointed he would have to be young and comparatively inexperienced man or one who had not succeeded in his profession.
