time. I attended Professor Douglas's Chinese Classes, Session 1880-81, for a short time.

2. After remaining here for a short time. I was ordered by the Governor to proceed to the interior of China, where I devoted myself to the study of Chinese, and came back here for examination after six months' residence in China. On passing that examination I returned to the interior for another six months, and at the end of that time passed a second examination in Chinese. With reference to this examination Lord Kimberley, in despatch No.148 of 18th November, 1881, was pleased to express his satisfaction at my progress in the language. I was then attached for about four months to the Colonial Secretary's Office, and during that time, I was employed chiefly in translating Chinese into English.

3. Under instructions I again went to China and studied for a further period of six months, after which I was declared a passed Cadet. I was then appointed to act for two months as Chief Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office. As to the manner in which I performed the duties of those two offices, I would refer to His Excellency the Administrator's despatch, No.1298 of the 14th July, 1882, forwarding a minute by Mr. Stewart, the acting Colonial Secretary, and to Lord Kimberley's reply in despatch No.193 of the 6th September, 1882.
