In support of my application I may be permitted to mention the following service :-
On the 6th February 1868 I was appointed by Governor Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell to the post of Student's Interpreter at the Magistracy, which appointment I resigned in October 1869 to enter the service of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.
On the 14 September 1872, however, I re-entered the Civil Service of the Colony as 3rd Clerk in the Magistracy.
In the following year I was promoted to the Office of 2nd Clerk; and in February, 1875, I was further promoted to be 1st Clerk in the same Department.
While still holding the latter appointment, I was offered by Sir John Pope Hennessy the post of 2nd Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office upon the death of Mr J. M. D'Almada e Castro in February 1881; and Mr Nodehouse, then Clerk of Councils and Chief Clerk, being
