render vacant the office in the Police Department, and also that of Superintendent of the Fire Brigade at Aingsing.

2. Mr. Wodehouse, the Police Magistrate, applied for the latter office in a letter of which I enclose a copy; and I have conferred it on him (subject to Your Lordship's confirmation) under the powers given to the Governor by Ordinance 4 of 1868, (Section 3) and under the Conditions specified in the Colonial Secretary's letter of the 15th instant - The Salary is $80 per month.

3. Mr. Wodehouse is a very active and able-bodied Officer; and I am advised that it is desirable on public grounds that the Superintendent of the Brigade should be held by a gentleman invested with the authority of a Police Magistrate, and able to act promptly and officially at the commencement of any disturbances which may occur.
