observe that the Eucalypties (or Gumtree) of Australia, - which have been extensively planted in the South of France, in Italy, in Algeria, and in other fever-haunted countries, has proved to exercise a very salutary effect on the public health, has not been planted here in adequate numbers. Accordingly, I have directed the Superintendent to obtain forthwith from Queensland a large supply of the seed of those species of the Eucalyptus which flourish best in tropical and semi-tropical regions of that Colony, where the climate is somewhat similar to that of Hong Kong. I will cause large plantations of these trees to be made in the sheltered ravines near the town, and in other places where they will be protected from the typhoons by which this part of the world is sometimes devastated.

I shall continue to give my close attention to this subject, and will, from time to time, report upon it.
