an increase of his pay
Magistrate, for an
Coroner.
2. The present Salary attached to the Office of Coroner (fifty dollars per month) was fixed at a time when the population of this Island was much smaller than it is now; and it will be seen by reference to the tabular Statement annexed to Mr. Wodehouse's letter, that the average annual Number of cases dealt with during the Years 1879-1882 has risen to 215, as compared with 161 for the period 1872-1878. When the new Mortuary is completed, the Coroner will have to travel a quarter of a mile further than at present to his duties.
3. Under these circumstances, and after consultation with the principal officer of the Government, I am inclined to consider that Eighty (80) dollars per month, with an allowance for four (4) Coolies, would not be an excessive Salary to attach to the important Office of Coroner.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's Most Obedient
Humble Servant
