I do not deem it necessary for the purposes of this letter to set out the many other matters which the Registrar, as such, has attended to, as some of them are mentioned in the Report of the Honourable the Chief Justice, which Your Lordship has lately had under consideration and to which I would ask your Lordship again to refer.
To the office of Registrar, a salary of Eight hundred pounds was granted by The Civil List, a similar salary being allowed to the offices of 1. Police Magistrate, 2. Post Master General, 3. Colonial Chaplain, and 4. Colonial Surgeon, whilst a salary of Seven hundred pounds was granted to the 1. Harbour Master and 2. Registrar General. Some of these salaries have since been increased.
I trust I do not overestimate my office or exaggerate the difficulty and importance of its duties by saying they are equal to any of these - whilst it is, I submit, superior in both respects to some of them.
If the qualifications required for the office of Registrar, its duties and responsibilities, and the salaries attached to other offices in the Colony are considered, it cannot be said that the sum of Eight hundred pounds, which was fixed as the salary...
