Registrar of the Supreme Court of Hongkong.

I enclose a letter from the

Chief Justice (Sir George Phillips) on this interesting

subject. I find that the Attorney-General

also has formed a high opinion of Ackroyd's character and qualifications -

as a member of

the English Bar.

3. If Ackroyd's application

should be entertained, the conditions

recommended by the Chief Justice, should, I think, be enforced; also it should, I submit, be laid down that Mr. Ackroyd,

would be obliged to undertake, without

appeal, mere increase of salary, and further

duties,

duties, which the Judge

of

the Supreme

Court, with the approval of the Governor,

may, from time to time, impose upon him

I have the honor to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's Most Obedient

Humble Servant
