I enclose a letter from the
Chief Justice (Sir George Phillips) on this interesting
subject. I find that the Attorney-General
also has formed a high opinion of Ackroyd's character and qualifications -
as a member of
the English Bar.
3. If Ackroyd's application
should be entertained, the conditions
recommended by the Chief Justice, should, I think, be enforced; also it should, I submit, be laid down that Mr. Ackroyd,
would be obliged to undertake, without
appeal, mere increase of salary, and further
duties,
duties, which the Judge
of
the Supreme
Court, with the approval of the Governor,
may, from time to time, impose upon him
