My Lord,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's letter of the 3rd instant, and to state that I am at present in receipt of a salary of $800 per mensem, rising by annual increments of $100 to $1,200. I have at the same time to state that I have no private means, and that the foregoing represents my present total emoluments.

I have not the presumption to offer any opinion as to the adequacy or inadequacy of my present salary, and I should not wish to trouble your Lordship with the consideration of the adequacy or inadequacy of my salary as Police magistrate or as Coroner.
