We still occupy the same relative position, and I would suggest that it is
not usual and is rather
hard upon others who are prepared to accept a post
with its conditions and
responsibilities, that they should be passed over by
an
officer who refused
it when offered him, though
the duties and conditions
of
the office
were the
same
then as
they
are
now.
A decision in such a
case should be guiding until
other claimants
are
asked
whether they desire the post,
and I cannot avoid
feeling that in making
no
mention whatever of my
claims or
the
facts of
the
case to the Governor upon
his arrival, the outgoing
Administrator was doing
scarcely justice which
I had a right to expect.
I trust in what I have
said I have not made it
appear that I am actuated
by any animosity in the
present
matter. I am on terms
of cordial relationship with Mr. Marsh and Dr. Stewart, and I fully recognize Dr. Stewart's
great abilities and qualifications for the post.
It is however of the utmost
importance to me that I should
