Probable Indisposition six consequences!
of the death of Mr Suvuden.
Early in May 1881
Governor Sir John Pope Hennessy
thought well enough of his own accord to recommend me to Lord Kimberley for the post of Puisne Judge in consequence the Office became vacant by the promotion of Mr Snowden to the Chief Justiceship, and his Lordship in reply to that and to an application which I made when in England stated that my name had been voted for legal preferment- as will appear by a reference to Colonial Office despatch of 6th October 1881 addressed to Governor Hennessy.
In conclusion I venture to hope that my knowledge of the Chinese people, their law, their language, laws and customs will count for something with Your Lordship; and if it pleases Your Lordship to confirm me in the post in which I now hold provisionally I shall feel grateful and spare no effort to justify the selection.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's Obedient humble Servant
Acting Puisne Judge
