the purchasing, and processing of all prepared opium

in California, Portland, Victoria, etc.

Article 5 There will be twelve superintendents (in His Majesty's Company) who, with superintendents, will supervise the management (of the Company's business) without pay.

The remuneration (of the 17 Superintendents, broadly speaking) is to appoint eight and further (Ex.) to appoint nine (persons, who must be persons of integrity) in managing the public business.

It is publicly decided that in each month, two things and further, we shall each of them select who will manage or appoint a manager for the Company in monthly rotation, general trusteeship, so that each superintendent may have a share in the labour.

Article 6th It is hereby decided that Opium shall be prepared by the (undermentioned) seven (7) shops trading under the styles of Juk Lung, Lai Fong, Chin Jung, Chun Un, Ping Hing, Tung Lung, and the Sing Chun.

And from henceforth, no other shop shall be allowed to be opened to boil and prepare Opium for the said Company; nor shall any be added thereto. The said seven (7) shops are willing to (or with their own consent) undertake to prepare opium for the Sun I Company whenever required for a term, a period of fifty years, and at the expiration of the term (mentioned above), the said Company shall have the option of giving another fifty years on (the same terms), which is to be decided by all concerned and without repentance or rescission.

In the event of the expiry of the term of the Licenses, the interested shareholders of the Sun I Company must publicly tender in order to continue the business.

In the event of the business requesting the Company to tender for the same, that the happiness, whatever good may be derived, may be enjoyed by all, and let no one cherish different views in the matter. If the Company is prosperous in any other port or posts for which this (Sun I) Company deems fit to manage, whatever port, the said seven (7) Shops must solicit...
